Abstract

Anxiety disorder is one of the most common mental health problems experienced by university students and can negatively affect their academic performance, social interactions, and psychological well-being. Although various counseling services have been implemented to address anxiety, studies examining the effectiveness of group counseling using the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) approach among university students remain limited. Therefore, this study was conducted to provide empirical evidence regarding changes in anxiety levels following participation in the intervention. This study aimed to examine changes in university students’ anxiety disorder levels after participating in group counseling based on the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) approach. A quantitative approach with a one-group pretest-posttest design was employed. The sample consisted of seven university students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a 48-item Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire, which had been established as valid and reliable. The data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Ranks Test. The findings indicated a decrease in students’ anxiety disorder levels following the group counseling intervention, with a significance value of p < 0.05, indicating a significant difference between the pretest and posttest scores. These findings suggest that group counseling based on the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) approach has the potential to reduce anxiety disorder among university students. This study implies that the CBT approach may serve as an alternative counseling intervention in higher education settings to help students manage anxiety
